Behold: the trailer for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog! Watch it. I know it sounds cheesy. I know you hate musicals. Watch it anyway.

If you love Firefly like I love Firefly (and if you don’t know Firefly, shame on you!), watch it for Nathan Fillion – he’s deliciously smarmy and despicable. If you are a fan of Doogie Howser (or not, whatever), watch it for Neil Patrick Harris, who is nothing short of brilliant. If you’re one of those psychotic Joss Whedon fans (which I am NOT – sorry) … well, then you probably knew about this long before I did, so never mind. Watch it because it’s part of an important movement in intellectual property rights and freedom on the internet. I don’t care. Just watch it – it’s good and it will make you laugh. And we could all use more of that these days.

Just how small the world really is

A few months back I started a family tree on an online genealogy site. When I started it, I had just realized how little I knew about my family history, and I decided I wanted Bean to know where he came from. I hit plenty of dead ends at first, and I didn’t have much time to devote to it (I still don’t).

So I get an email from someone in Scotland over the weekend asking about that very same family tree. It seems one of her family members may be my great-grandmother, and she might have pictures of my family from back when. Unfortunately, I don’t have much info to share, but some of the things she mentioned sounded like it was plausible. The names and location match perfectly.

Anyway, to make a long story short… she sends the pictures to me, and I get to see a picture of the Great-Grandfather I don’t remember. Better than that, The Bean gets to see a picture of his Great-Great-Grandfather holding his Great-Grandfather as a baby.

Under the weather

Bean and I had our first weekend away from home, visiting Uncle Boz, Aunt Chelsea, Cousin Justice and soon-to-be Cousin Eve (along with Maga, Michael, Pat and Abby) in Ludington. We had a wonderful time, and Bean was a trooper. Sleeping in strange places was the only thing that seemed to throw him off at all, including his first time around other kids, a restaurant at nap time and 7 hours in the car in 3 days. He was charming and agreeable the whole time; that kid is not afraid of anything. Thanks to everybody for making our first trip such a fun and easy one. Hopefully, next time, Daddy can come with us.

And then, Bean breaks out in hives yesterday morning for no apparent reason. Dave and I wracked our brains to think of new foods, new soap, new clothes … but nothing. We even brought all our own food from home for the trip. Of course, the hives disappeared by the time we got in to see our pediatrician, who spent 5 minutes with us and basically said, “These things happen,” before sending us on our way. Alls well, right? Not so much. Bean woke up at 2AM last night with hives AND a 101 degree fever. Gave him Benadryl, and he went back to sleep. No hives this morning, but a low grade fever that went away shortly after he got up. Fine for most of the day, but he woke up from his afternoon nap with a temp of 103. His fever started falling almost immediately, but he was still warm when I put him to bed. He’s a little cranky and very tired last couple of days, but no other symptoms. I’ve been vaguely queasy all day, and Dave started having dizzy spells right before he left for work. We’re all just a mess.

Ok, maybe that’s a little arrogant, but… I lost a few things when the new version of wordpress decided to not play nice after I updated. So we had to revert back, things now work again. All is well on the internets. If you’ve commented since Friday, I lost it, I apologize. What a big pain in the ass I am.

EDIT – I managed to find the comments stashed in the cache, and re-entered them into the database.

Settling in

How do I know that I’ve settled in to my role as a father? I present to you the following evidence:

I was jealous of Bean’s dinner, mashed banana and pureed parsnips;
I actually said the phrase “wiggle when you giggle” today;
10:00 pm sounds late;
I attempt to name stuffed animals;
I’ve started reading daddy blogs;
I saw a minivan today and thought, “that looks kinda sporty, I like it”;
I just referred to myself as “daddy” … in my head … at 10:09 pm.

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about some changes to the website.

Over the next week or so I’ll be making some changes that may cause the site to go down briefly, and some things to be missing. If you’re reading this via the RSS feed, you may want to visit the site in the near future, the RSS address is probably going to change.
